When selecting the best online poker site at which to play, there are advantages to playing on dedicated UK poker sites. Although most poker sites provide the option of communicating with other players in English, not all of them allow players to deposit funds and play in sterling – exposing players to currency fluctuations and foreign exchange fees.
The U$/£ exchange rate has fluctuated by 16 per cent in the last two years and by 25 per cent since 2008. If you had won $1,000 playing online poker in 2008, it would have worth less than £500.00. At the beginning of 2017, the same win would be worth £625.00. Although this is a happy situation to be in at the beginning of 2017, it can quite as easily go the other way too!

Selecting the Best Poker Sites for UK Players
Many of the leading UK poker sites are familiar high street names because of their background in horse-racing and sports betting and sometimes it is a good idea to focus on these UK poker rooms because many of their clients will have drifted over to poker from other areas of the site. As online poker players known, there is a world of difference between having the skills to win a multi table poker tournament and selecting the winner of the 3.15 at Goodwood!
Another advantage of playing on a UK poker site which predominantly caters for the UK market is that all poker room chat has to be conducted in English. Although English is supposed to be exclusively spoken on other poker sites, the rules are not always adhered to or enforced and, if you have even found yourself on a table against two Russians, it is probable that they are ganging up on you without you even being aware of it.
There are benefits too of playing poker in Sterling. No matter what happens to the exchange rate, playing in Sterling creates a sense of playing for “real cash” rather than Mickey Mouse money. Although this will not stop players from blowing their winnings from the 3.15 at Goodwood, you can gauge exactly what difference your poker bonus and profit make to what you have in your pocket.
And What about European Poker Rooms?
Some of the European poker sites will allow players from the UK to open accounts in Sterling. Even if players only have the option of banking in €uros, the currency has not been as volatile as the dollar in recent years (whether it will remain that way we will see!) and it is pretty easy to work out that (at the minute) a €uro is worth about 80 pence.
Picking a European poker site to play on should be done with thought towards which nationalities are allowed to play on them. Some European poker rooms do not allow the Spanish to play on them because of licensing laws in Spain. Others will not allow the French to play in cash games (Mon Dieu!) or the Italians to compete in tournaments (Mio Dio!).
As the Spanish, French and Italians are renowned to be the worst poker players in Europe, it is in your best interests to find a European poker site which allows everybody in! Preferably one on which everybody has to speak in English and that provides games – and allows banking transactions – in Sterling.
