Daniel Negreanu and Tony G Among Big Names for EPT Super High Roller

Posted on by Kevin Mace

European Poker TourDaniel Negreanu, Tony G and Bertrand ‘ElkY’ Grospellier are among the 20 big-name pros to have already signed up to take part in the “historic” first €100,000 buy-in Super High Roller event to be staged in Europe – ensuring that the PokerStars European Poker Tour (EPT) Grand Final tournament in Monaco will offer at least €2 million in prizes.

The Super High Roller event will kick-start the EPT stop at the dazzling Monte Carlo Bay Hotel & Resort on Monday, April 23, for the nine-day poker festival that draws to a conclusion on Tuesday, May 1, for what will surely be an appropriately glamorous ending to an amazing 12 months on the tour.

London-based Frenchman Grospellier – who earned $1,006,308 for taking down both No-Limit Hold’em High Roller events, with €25,000 and €10,000 buy-ins, last May when the EPT Grand Final was staged in Madrid’s Casino Grand – is definitely excited about the prospect of facing up to the likes of fellow Team PokerStars Pro Negreanu and Team PartyPoker Pro Tony G.

Bertrand ‘ElkY’ Grospellier Expects ‘Exciting’ Event

The 31-year-old Triple Crown winner said: “There are some big names signed up to play, and that always makes for an exciting tournament – not only for the players at the table, but for the spectators, too.”

Elky has certainly got a point as he will also be joined by the likes of Global Poker Index (GPI) world number one Jonathan Duhamel, two-time World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelet winner Jason Mercier and online sensation Viktor ‘Isildur1’ Blom – who are all fellow Team PokerStars Pro team-mates of the Frenchman – among others to create one of the most outstanding fields ever assembled.

Edgar Stuchly, the EPT’s president, was also thrilled by the stellar line-up – which also includes Eugene Katchalov, Dan Smith, Scott Seiver, Dan Shak, David ‘Doc’ Sands, Jason Somerville, Patrik Antonius and Sorel Mizzi – saying: “We are extremely pleased to have such a fantastic response to the first ever European Super High Roller event and we look forward to welcoming some of the biggest names in international poker.

“It is fitting that such a historic tournament is taking place in Monaco – the spiritual home of high stakes gaming. I am expecting that it will be an action-packed tournament and will prove worthy of its place in poker history.”

Richest Poker Festival in Europe

The EPT season eight finale in Monaco will also include another 36 events in what will undoubtedly be the richest poker festival ever staged in Europe – following on from the massively successful stops in London, Madrid, Campione and Prague.

However, as all EPT stops attract recreational players, as well as the pros, the Grand Final schedule will include a wide range of buy-ins – starting at just €200 – and game variations, as well as numerous side events, to ensure that there is something for everyone to enjoy.

Also taking place in Monaco, come the end of tournament play, is the PokerStars EPT Season 8 Player of the Year Awards ceremony – with everyone chasing down Czech Republic pro Ondrej Vinklarek to collect the honour.

The EPT Barcelona €1,000 buy-in No-Limit Hold’em winner from last August has been on top of the leaderboard for a while now – and even managed to stay in front following last weekend’s EPT Campione – but is being chased down by the likes of Welshman Roberto Romanello, Germany’s Martin Finger, American Steve O’Dwyer and Chilean Nick Yunis, as well Team PokerStars Pros Duhamel and Katchalov.

There certainly should be an exciting end to this particular race, with all being revealed at 21:00 CET (Central European Time) at the invitation-only awards ceremony, which will then be followed by the PokerStars EPT Season 8 Wrap Party at 21:30 CET.

If you fancy getting in on the Grand Final main event action, satellite qualifiers are still running at PokerStars, with buy-ins starting at just €1.10 or 750 FPPs (frequent player points).
